The French Film Festival and the International Film Festival in Singapore
Chronology
Follow a singer who dies suddenly while on tour in Japan, but his spirit lives on as he embarks on a journey to find humanity in the afterlife. The Singapore premiere, which is also the film’s Southeast Asian premiere, will be presented in conjunction with the 40th vOilah! “World of Spirits” is a multi-layered film centered on two very human impulses.
First, the creative instinct that drives artists, and secondly, the emotional need for family ties
at the very beginning of the film, we present three characters who somehow lost touch with both impulses. Singer and songwriter Claire (Deneuve), Yuzo (Sakai)—a former songwriter, now a piano tuner—and her ex-son Hayato (Takenouchi), an anime director whose famous work is now apparently behind him. These three characters are required to make decisions and take actions after death and beyond.
to life, to find a solution to life’s unsolvable problems
This is, of course, a very idealized view of the universal question: what happens after we die? The spiritual world answers this question very realistically and prosaically. Having discarded the fear of the unknown and made a choice in favor of helping the living, the selfless efforts of our protagonists lead to the realization of their own humble desires.
From a technical point of view, Spirit World meets all the requirements for audience engagement
This is a life-affirming message from the World of Spirits: the creative impulse can bear fruit in improving family ties, if it is used with a selfless purpose. Depicting the beautiful landscapes (and seascapes) of Takasaki and Chiba, the delightful performances offer pure visual pleasure and a tribute to the musical artists of the 60s and 70s, a golden age of creativity that may never be repeated. A sweet and soulful cinematic experience for everyone who feels the pull of creativity and family love.
